What to expect if you need eye surgery at our Surgery Center

As you enter the surgery center you will be greeted by our highly skilled and friendly staff who will make sure all your paper work is in order.
One of our highly experienced registered nurses will then escort you to the pre- and post-operative area where you will be seated in a comfortable recliner. We encourage your accompanying family member or friend to remain with you. If you are having cataract surgery, eye drops will be administered to prepare your eye for surgery. The nurse will present written and verbal instructions and answer questions about your surgery and how to take care of your eye when you return home. One of our nurse anesthetists will speak to you about your medical history and answer any questions about your anesthesia. You will receive some relaxing medication, usually administered under the tongue, and rest quietly until it is time for surgery.

You will be escorted to the operating room by the circulating nurse and the nurse anesthetist. There is no need to change out of your street clothes.
In the operating room you will be prepared for your surgery, to be performed by Dr. James Putnam, Dr. Steve Witkin or Dr. Michael Garvey, using state-of-the-art equipment and the latest intraocular lens technology. The operating room stay is usually under 20 minutes. You will be escorted back to your recliner in the post operative area where you will be given something to eat and drink, your vital signs will be monitored until you are ready to leave, and you will receive additional verbal and written instructions. The usual post-operative stay is 20 minutes.

You will be seen by your surgeon the next day. A day or two after seeing your surgeon you can expect a call from one of our nurses to see how you are doing. The nurse will also make sure that you understand all of the instructions you received on the day of surgery.
The doctors and staff at Maine Eye Care Surgery Center are devoted to providing you with the highest quality of eye surgery care. We are committed to making your experience with us as comfortable and pleasurable as possible!
